Lung Cancer Prevention

At the NCI-designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, we’re focused on preventing lung cancer from ever starting and catching it as early as possible, when treatment is easiest and most effective.

Lung cancer prevention is one of the many goals of our world-renowned lung cancer team. This highly specialized team uses state-of-the-art tools to diagnose lung cancer in its earliest stages. We are at the forefront of new and innovative methods for preventing and treating lung cancer. Our team-oriented approach combines breakthrough innovations in radiotherapy, chemotherapy, drug intervention, and surgery with exceptional, comprehensive patient care.

Using tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer, putting a person at the greatest risk. Tobacco includes cigarettes, vaping, cigars, pipes, and chewing tobacco. The second leading cause of lung cancer is indoor exposure to radon gas. Breathing radon over prolonged periods can lead to significant health risks. Talk to your provider about your risk for lung cancer.

You can do several things to lower your chances of getting lung cancer. These include quitting smoking and avoiding secondhand smoke. In addition, if you live in an older home, test your home for radon. It’s also important to identify lung cancer in its earliest stage, so getting screened if you are at risk can help.

For more than 50 years, Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center has been a leader in the research, diagnosis, and treatment of over 200 types of cancer. Turn to us for expert cancer screening and prevention.
