Preparing for Your First Appointment

Before your first appointment, there are some things you can do and information you can gather in advance to make the most of your visit. We recommend you check with your insurance company before your first visit. Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center accepts most major insurance plans, and our knowledgeable and compassionate financial counselors can answer any questions you have about the cost of cancer care.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment

There may be a lot of information covered in your first appointment. Your doctor will have many questions, and you will as well. Be prepared to talk with the doctor about your medical and family history.

It’s helpful to have a family member or close friend join you for your first appointment, to listen and take notes. Consider jotting down a list of your questions and concerns to share with your care team. In addition to your list of questions, please bring:

  • An ID card and your insurance information
  • Insurance co-pay

  • List of medications and allergies

  • Medical records, images and other test results, if performed somewhere other than Montefiore Einstein

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

When you visit our Cancer Center, our dedicated team members are here to answer your questions and discuss your concerns. In addition, your cancer specialist may conduct a physical exam to look for cancer signs and symptoms.

We'll also pair you with your own nurse navigator who will help you throughout your cancer care.

Below are some things to keep in mind about your first appointment:

  • Arrive early: You may need to complete paperwork at your first appointment. Arriving early will allow you to complete this paperwork before meeting with your doctor. You can also access and complete paperwork before your appointment using the “pre-check-in” feature on Montefiore MyChart, our online patient portal.

  • Be prepared for tests: Even if you’ve already been diagnosed with cancer, your doctors may ask for additional tests, including blood work or imaging. These tests can help with more accurate diagnosis and staging. Some tests may require preparation such as not eating for several hours ahead of time. Your care team will let you know how to prepare.

  • Give yourself plenty of time: Some of our locations offer multidisciplinary appointments. This means you will meet with your entire care team at these appointments during a single visit. These visits can take several hours and include a complete assessment with a nurse and one-on-one discussions with your specialists.

Beyond Your First Appointment

Your cancer care team will create a personalized treatment plan specific to your cancer type and stage. Your treatment may require multiple appointments and visits to other Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center locations. Your nurse navigator will help you with appointment scheduling and connect you with other services and support.

You can also review your medical record and communicate with your care team through Montefiore MyChart.
